The overall goal of the project is to promote inclusion and participation of all genders and sexualities in European grassroots sports. This requires an understanding of how athletes are still excluded from sport due to a prevailing binary gender norm.

LGBTIQ in sport: which lessons from QATAR 2022

The topic of LGBTIQ+ rights in sports gained worldwide relevance during and after the Fifa Worldcup in Qatar 2022.

Before the competition, the public debate emerged as never before. From Josh Cavallo’s statements until the interview of Ambassador Khalid Salman, who defined homosexuality as an “illness”, LGBTIQ+ rights became an intensively discussed topic related to the World Cup.

The first in-person meeting of the partners of the EU project “Sport for all Genders and Sexualities!” (SGS) took place in Cologne.

From July 25 to 26, the partners from Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany and Austria met in person for the first time. In intense meetings, the focus, apart from administrative matters, was mainly on two main points.

“Combating Hate Speech in Sport”, a new joint project co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe aims to explore innovative approaches to tackle racism, homo-bi-transphobia, sexism and other manifestations of hate speech.

We titled the webinar “The rise of visibility” starting from the many instances of coming out we had in 2021 and during the Olympics. The general idea of this webinar is how to shift from the fight for visibility to the fight for a really inclusive sport.
