LGBTIQ in sport: which lessons from QATAR 2022

The topic of LGBTIQ+ rights in sports gained worldwide relevance during and after the Fifa Worldcup in Qatar 2022.

Before the competition, the public debate emerged as never before. From Josh Cavallo’s statements until the interview of Ambassador Khalid Salman, who defined homosexuality as an “illness”, LGBTIQ+ rights became an intensively discussed topic related to the World Cup.

The first personal meeting of the partners of the EU project “Sport for all Genders and Sexualities!” (SGS) took place in Cologne.

From July 25 to 26, the partners from Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany and Austria met in person for the first time. In intense meetings, the focus, apart from administrative matters, was mainly on two main points.

We titled the webinar “The rise of visibility” starting from the many instances of coming out we had in 2021 and during the Olympics. The general idea of this webinar is how to shift from the fight for visibility to the fight for a really inclusive sport.

We launched the Outsport Network, a place for sharing best practices and encouraging new partnerships across Europe in the field of Sport, SOGI issues, education and inclusion.
