(English) Lewis Hamilton under fire for telling his nephew ‘Boys don’t wear princess dresses’
Lewis Hamilton has sparked outrage after sharing a video in which he tells his young nephew: “Boys don’t wear princess dresses.”
In the video, the Formula One driver can be seen disapprovingly commenting on his nephew’s choice of attire.
Hamilton begins the video by facing the camera and expressing his disappointment.
“I’m so sad right now. Look at my nephew,” he says.
He then turns the camera on the young boy, who is very happily wearing a princess dress and waving a toy wand.
Hamilton asks: “Why are you wearing a princess dress? Is this what you got for Christmas?”
His nephew responds very enthusiastically, evidently enjoying wearing the pink and purple dress.
The boy seems to be none the wiser that he is being lambasted by his uncle.
The Formula One world champion was accused of humiliating his nephew online and has apologised for his “inapropriate comments”. Hamilton has deleted the short video from his instragram and twitted: “Yesterday I was playing around with my nephew and realised that my words were inappropriate so I removed the post. I meant no harm and did not mean to offend anyone at all. I love that my nephew feels free to express himself as we all should”.
Then he added: “My deepest apologies for my behaviour as I realise it is really not acceptable for anyone, no matter where you are from, to marginalise or stereotype anyone. I have always been in support of anyone living their life exactly how they wish and I hope I can be forgiven for this lapse in judgement”.
